چکیده

Newborn babies of African origin occasionally undergo massive haemorrhage into the soft tissues of the scalp. The resulting haematoma differs from the more usual variety of cephalhaematoma in being anatomically subaponeurotic, not subperiosteal. Not being confined by periosteal attachments, the haematoma is not limited to the area overlying a single skull bone, but extends through the soft areolar tissue of the scalp and covers the whole calvarium beneath the epicranial aponeurosis. Consequently this variety of haematoma may be far larger than a subperiosteal cephalhaematoma, and the blood loss into it may almost exsanguinate the infant. The purposes of this report are first to draw atention to the occurrence of this condition in African and West Indian babies and to the severity of the blood loss, and secondly to describe a simple rough method of calculating the extent of blood loss.

Embolisation of a bronchial artery of anomalous origin in massive haemoptysis.

Massive haemoptysis is the most dreaded of all respiratory emergencies. Bronchial artery embolisation is known to be a safe and effective procedure in massive haemoptysis. Bronchial artery of anomalous origin presents a diagnostic challenge to interventional radiologists searching for the source of haemorrhage. Here, we report a case of massive haemoptysis secondary to a lung carcinoma with the...

A study of cerebral blood flow autoregulation in the extremely premature, very low birth weight baby

Introduction Preterm very low birth weight babies are at high risk of brain injury. Despite improvement in mortality rates the morbidity from brain injury in these babies remains high. Whilst some of the brain injury is bound up in the causation of their prematurity and is therefore antenatal in origin there remains a percentage that suffer from postnatally acquired brain injury. These babies a...

Comparison of birth weight-gestation distribution in cases of stillbirth and neonatal death according to lesions found at necropsy.

The birth weight/gestation distribution of a large series of cases of perinatal death has been analysed according to the lesion (or lesions) present at necropsy. Among the lesions associated with low gestation babies dying with hyaline membranes have a much higher mean birth weight for gestation than either the babies with intraventricular haemorrhage or "no cause found." Among infants dying of...
